Women tend to develop High Blood Pressure once they grow older. At age 35, only one-third of women will have High Blood Pressure. Once over the age of 65, their risk is the same as males. What is Hypertension

Hypertension is also commonly known as High Blood Pressure. It occurs when the pressure inside a person’s large arteries is very high. The only way to determine if someone has Hypertension is by having your blood pressure measured. This is because the condition is silent. Hypertension can cause other serious health problems and even death. This is why it has been called the silent killer. One reason why it has this name is because it does not have any certain symptoms. The only way a person will know for sure is by getting their pressure checked. The other reason for this name is because it is a killer. People who have Hypertension and do not have it treated are more likely to die from strokes, heart attacks, and kidney failure.

Since the only way to determine if your blood pressure is too high is by having it measured, it will have to be done correctly. This is a simple process. Before having it measured, the person should sit and relax for at least 5 minutes. Being stressed, angry, or excited can give the wrong result. It is recommended to avoid caffeine, alcohol, food, and tobacco for an hour before being measured. These can affect the results and misdiagnose a person who may not actually have Hypertension, or it could show the person has an extra high blood pressure than they normally do.

Your blood pressure is determined by two numbers, such as 120/80. The larger number is known as the systolic pressure. This represents the pressure in your arteries that occurs when your heart beats. The lower number is called the diastolic pressure. This number represents the pressure in your arteries when your heart is calm in between heartbeats.

Hypertension can be treated. There have been many advances when it comes to treating Hypertension with medications. The problem is, is that not many people even are aware that they have Hypertension. The people that do know that they have the condition do not always get the best treatment to control their Hypertension.

Everyone should get their blood pressure checked to make sure they are not suffering from High Blood Pressure. It is any easy process, which can save your life. Knowing if you have Hypertension will help you control it and stay healthy. Next time you visit your doctor, suggest having your blood pressure measured.

Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

Having high blood pressure is a condition known as Hypertension. More than 50 million Americans have it. Within those 50 million, about 30% have not even been diagnosed. Hypertension does not have many symptoms which is why it can be referred to as a silent killer since it causes damage to the body with little to no symptoms.

Many people will find out they have Hypertension by accident at a Doctor visit. Another reason they determine that a person has the condition is if the person develops complications of Hypertension. These complications can include kidney disease or failure, heart disease, stroke, impaired vision, and other problems.

Although the condition usually does not have many symptoms, some people who have Hypertension will suffer from headaches, dizziness, papilloedema, and confusion.

Even if the person is suffering from at least one of these, it may not be caused by Hypertension. There are symptoms of Hypertension that only a Doctor can notice. That is why it is important to visit your Doctor and be checked for this condition.

Very severe High Blood Pressure, especially malignant high blood pressure can cause headaches that are common in the morning, nausea and vomiting, and visual impairments. If Hypertension is not treated, it can cause damage of the heart and kidneys. This can lead to stroke, heart disease, and eye damage.

There are two diseases that can be caused by Hypertension. One of those is Preeclampsia. Any high blood pressure during pregnancy is a type of gestational hypertension. Preeclampsia is severe High Blood Pressure for a pregnant woman. Eclampsia is when the person has very severe Gestational Hypertension which can cause seizures. Pheochromocytoma is the other disease that leads to Hypertension. It is a rare tumor that is found in the adrenal glands. Only 1 out of 1000 people who live with Hypertension actually has Pheochromocytoma, though.

Since there are not many symptoms to clue the person who has Hypertension, it is best to get checked to make sure you do not have the condition. Doing so will result in treating the problem if it exists. When you treat Hypertension you are not only doing so for your heart, but other organs in your body also. Remember that even if you have no symptoms, you still may have it. Your Doctor will be able to make the correct diagnosis and guide you in the right steps to treating it.
